Quick Link: Widgets (on Facebook) Are Dead??

There's an interesting post up today on Valleywag that seems to sound the death knell for widgets on Facebook.  They point out the fact that one of the major goals of the recent redesign was to "kill pointless widgets that cluttered user profiles."

Even more interesting, the post quotes a member of the Facebook team itself as saying, "widgets  have not survived the shift over and my guess is that within a matter of weeks we will see most top-performing widget applications practically disappear."

Within a matter of weeks most top widgets will practically disappear?! That's a pretty far-reaching, rapid change.  Make sure you take a look at the graph of the drop in the number of widget applications on Facebook since June of this year.  It's quite shocking!

What sort of implications do you think this trend has for widget makers and the widget space in general?  Leave your opinions in the comment section!
