NewsGator Consumer RSS Reader Product Changes & Google Sync
You spoke and we listened: in response to customer demand, NewsGator's best-of-breed consumer RSS applications now work with Google ReaderTM. Google Reader will become the online companion to, and the synchronization platform for, our award-winning RSS reader applications. Our RSS readers include FeedDemon, the most popular Windows RSS reader; NetNewsWire, the leading application for RSS reading on the Mac; and NetNewsWire for the iPhone, one of TIME magazine’s top 10 iPhone Apps of 2008. New versions of FeedDemon and NetNewsWire are available today, and a new version of NetNewsWire for iPhone will be available soon.
As part of this transition, NewsGator Online users will need to migrate to Google Reader by August 31, 2009. You can find step-by-step instructions on how to easily migrate your RSS subscriptions here, and we'll provide some in-product reminders to our NewsGator Online users.
Users of FeedDemon, NetNewsWire for Mac, and NetNewsWire for the iPhone will have 30 days to download new versions of these applications that can synchronize with Google Reader. Syncing will give you a consistent reading experience across your PC, Mac, iPhone, and web browser. For example, if you add a new RSS feed, organize your folders, or mark some stories as read on one device, the changes will immediately reflect across the others. Users of NewsGator Go! can select from the mobile RSS reader options that synchronize with Google Reader.
The bottom line for you: we keep improving our client applications, and now you can sync with and use the web based RSS reader you've been asking for. We've been working with the Google team to make these changes as smooth as possible, and they are thrilled to welcome all NewsGator users to the Reader family.
You'll need a Google account to get started with Google Reader, and can read our simple instructions on how to activate syncing with Google Reader here.

Does this mean that Google Reader will support authenticated RSS feeds or will we be losing that capability when NewsGator goes away?

Awesome. I switched from NetNewsWire to Google Reader ages ago, and I really miss the iPhone client. Time to start using it again soon then! :D

This is sad. I don't want to use google for everything (or even anything, really) and up to now, Newsgator has been awesome.

I infinitely preferred Newsgator as it was to Google Reader. Thanks for a lot for abandoning me. I also can't get your stupid export procedure to work.

Is there another service that supports folders and subfolders like NewsGator Online? I tried moving to Google Reader and the tagging method just doesn't work for me--I need the great folder/subfolder structure. Or is there any way to pay to keep my existing NewsGator Online service?

I assume this means that the NewsGator API will be shut down, as well. What a loss. Now I have to recode my RSS reader project to work with the undocumented, unofficial Google Reader API.

I use Newsgator because I want an alternative to Google Reader. Now that this is no longer an option, I'll be looking for another product.
Posted by: Jim | July 30, 2009 at 02:02 PM
I paid for my Newsgator account and synchronization service to FeedDemon. Do I get a refund of the unused portions?

The version of NetNewsWire that will sync with Google Reader does not support Tiger (10.4). Being a work computer, I don't have the option to upgrade to Leopard (10.5), so I will have to find a new feedreader instead. How annoying.

I'm sad. I much prefer NewsGator to Google Reader. As of right now, I can't get to my authenticated RSS feeds on Google Reader.
Like Cantrell, I hope that this feature appears in Google Reader to remedy this situation. Google Reader is useless to me without authenticated RSS support.

I tried Google Reader a couple months ago and decided to stick with NewsGator because it supports Authenticated RSS. About 90% of my feeds require authentication. This is one feature that I do not want to loose.

This completely blows. I have used NewsGator Online for quite a while and it's much easier to use.
I do like most of Google's services, but Google Reader is just awful!

Why does NNW 3.1.7 say there are no updates if the email sent and this blog post say I need a new version?
Posted by: BillSaysThis | July 30, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Boo this sucks. I hate google reader. I stopped using it because I found the interface clunky and slow and appreciated the sync capabilities of newsgator. I guess I'll go back to Vienna now. VERY VERY VERY disappointed in this decision. So stupid. Who asked for this? Who asked how customers would feel about this? Why ruin a great product? I'm upset.

So, if i do not want to have a google account i will have to say goodbye to netneeswire? I hope not.

Happy to have Netnewswire sync via Google Reader, but the "easy-to-use wizard" to associate the two is nowhere to be found in latest version of NNW (3.1.7/1238). Am I missing it?

"You spoke and we listened"? It's not that simple unfortunately. I intentionally chose Newsgator Online because it is so much better than Google Reader. I have devoted hundreds of hours to setting up and tagging all my items, something I can't do in Google and can't update into the Google Reader system. This was my research base and now it's going to be gone. So, I'm pretty devastated by this and would have appreciated a more honest "we're moving in a different direction financially" explanation than a "you spoke and we listened" approach. I certainly don't feel listened to, my business has lost huge momentum because of this.

This really stinks, Google reader is blocked at work. Any other suggestions besides google reader?
Posted by: DD | July 30, 2009 at 02:53 PM
Severely disappointed. My mode of working is - log into email, get my mail, get my feeds, leave it there and it auto updates.
Apparently someone has decided I'm doing it all wrong and I should be bringing up a browser session AS WELL. I chose NewsGator for NewsGator Inbox because I want to work the way I want to work.

Damn it. I switched to NewsGator to hide what I read from Google's all seeing eye. Now where I can go?!!?
Posted by: Andy | July 30, 2009 at 03:01 PM
NewsGator was a great product. NewsGator mobile was even better, the best mobile reader, much faster than Google reader mobile.
I can't believe I won't use it anymore in 30 days. I'll miss it

This sucks. I hate Google Reader, and finally found a Feed Reader I was happy with (netnewswire.)
So now I have to go back to crappy reader, but I have to go through a pain-in-butt transition to get my feeds back over there, too. BOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Posted by: Steph | July 30, 2009 at 03:06 PM
Ouch! This is not an improvement and a major downgrade: the reason I use the paid version of NNW is for multimachine synchronization and "localization" where not all feeds are on all machines. I will not be able to do this with google reader. I also do not wish to give my data to google. Please at least keep the ftp synchronization available.

Good news!
However: the current beta is really beta. People with lots of feeds should be very careful: it totally messes the whole folder structures up. If I could go back one version, right now I would.... :-( mat

I think that there is a group of people who use NewsGator online as it's better that Google Reader and they are forced to use GR. Google this... Google that...Google everything...
You don't leave people any choice.
